One-on-one cultural architecture for people in liminal space

SOME TRANSITIONS REQUIRE WITNESSING

Not everything can be done in groups. Some thresholds require a guide who can hold the complexity, sit with the uncertainty, and help you stay with the work when every instinct says to run.

I work one-on-one with people navigating significant life transitions—career reinventions, relationship reconfigurations, identity evolutions, existential impasses. This isn't therapy as usual. It's compositional work.

WHAT WE DO

We start by making your current storyfield visible. What narratives are you living within? What chronotopes (time-space patterns) organize your days? What stories have outlived their usefulness?

Then we build. Using futuring practices, chronotopic design, and narrative scaffolding, we create the conditions for new possibilities to emerge. This isn't about fixing what's broken—it's about designing what wants to be born.

THE APPROACH

I draw from 15+ years as a narrative therapist, combined with futuring practices, scenario planning, and cultural theory. Sessions are typically 50-60 minutes, meeting weekly or bi-weekly via secure video.

This work requires:

  • Tolerance for ambiguity and discomfort

  • Willingness to question your own assumptions

  • Capacity for intellectual engagement

  • Commitment to practice between sessions

  • Patience with process over outcome

WHO THIS IS FOR

People navigating:

  • Major career or professional identity transitions

  • Relationship endings, beginnings, or reconfigurations

  • Creative practice evolution or reinvention

  • Geographic or cultural displacement

  • Existential or meaning-making crises

  • Identity shifts that outpace social recognition

You should be someone who:

  • Thinks in systems and patterns

  • Values theoretical grounding alongside practical application

  • Can work with metaphor and abstraction

  • Refuses easy answers or premature closure

  • Wants to design futures, not just escape the present

A NOTE ON FIT

Not everyone is a good fit for this work, and that's okay. If you're looking for symptom relief, behavioral strategies, or someone to tell you everything will be fine, there are excellent therapists and coaches who can help you.

I work best with people who are intellectually curious, tolerant of uncertainty, and willing to do the hard work of staying with disorientation without rushing toward resolution.

If that sounds like you, let's talk.

“Chris Hoff led our staff from the Center for International Education, CSULB through an engaging team-learning task.

The reflective closure activity resulted in our team creating a program-wide action to affect the rest of the campus through an integrative, giving and appreciation campaign.”
